Jun 2003

Last week I have been to Kamakura, an ancient capital of Japan.
Kamakura is very famous for hydrangea, but now in early June the season
of hydrangea has just begun. A hydrangea is a flower during the rainy
season in Japan.

I took a walk around Kamakura enjoying the history in the gentle early
summer sunlight for more than 2.5 hours from Kita-kamakura, Kennchouji-
Temple, Tsurugaoka-Shrine,Yuigahama-Beach, Inamuragasaki, and finally
to Shichirigahama-Beach.
(Please see http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~QM9T-KNDU/)

According to Taiheiki (a Japanese classic novel),Yoshisada Nitta,a general
in the Kamakura period, had raised an army at Nitta town in Gunma
Prefecture on May 8th 1333, and on May 18th they started to assault
Kamakura shogunate.

Early morning on May 21st, just before an attack from Inamuragasaki area
Yoshisada prayed for victory and dedicated his sword into the sea.
Strangely enough, the tide was ebbing and his army could wade to
Kamakura. Finally he could get and win the battle.

During my walk in Kamakura I was thinking about "Order and Discipline".
A letter was sent from Emperor Godaigo urging Yoshisada to make an army
to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate. But at first, he was not convinced
of his victory against them. His army needed "Order and Discipline",
so that his intentions would reach the rank and file.
Besides distributions of rewards, even though it was a cheap trick,
Yoshisada needed to maintain "Order and Discipline".

Also in a private company it's important to maintain "Order and Discipline".
The old Japanese Army defined "Order and Discipline" as follows.
"Observe the rules strictly and Orders should be executed absolutely"
In every nation's armed forces, the first step of military discipline is to
teach "Seiri, Seiton, Seisou"(3S).

Seiri ; Sorting out the needed things from the unused things and
throwing the unused things away.
Seiton ; Set needed things to a fixed position and always keeping
them easy to take out, use and returned.
Seisou ; Perfect cleaning of corners, bottoms, insides, backs, etc.

The condtion of "Seiri, Seiton, Seisou"(3S) indicates the level of ability
and power of any organization.

3S is also a basic requirement of an excellent factory.
Children in Japan are taught 3S as a home discipline.
How to clean the room, how to put clothes, stationery, books,EEEetc.
Though most of Japanese people know how to do it, it is very difficult
to practice excellent 3S.
Even though they cannot practice 3S in their private life, how can they
practice 3S in a large factory ? 3S is a difficult task which should done
by all members. Practice of 3S brings "Order and Discipline".
3S is one of the basic requirements of an excellent company.

We, members of Yamashin Filter Group practice 3S as a job under
the name of "Environmental Maintenance" activity.
The organization with "Order and Discipline" is strong, trustworthy,
and promising.
Of course we are not perfect now, but we would like to be a company
with "Order and Discipline".

I hope for your continuous patronage and support on Yamashin Filter Group.
Thank you.
