Of the foul-smelling components generated at sewage treatment plants, those that are actually perceived to be unpleasant are sulfur compounds like hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, methyl sulfide, dimethyl sulfide, and ammonia, and nitrogen compounds. These malodorous substances are generated by the metabolic effect of organisms such as sulfate-reducing bacteria and proteolytic bacteria on sulfate ions and/or organic substances under anaerobic conditions.
